Actively monitor conflict levels According to Finn (2011), “Children are neurologically and developmentally impacted by stress and tension from a very early pre-verbal age, and possibly in utero.”

I believe that we all need to monitor conflict in the same way that physicians regularly check blood pressure levels. When a stepfamily member describes a tense interchange with another adult, I always ask (gently), “Were any of the kids there?” “Kids” include young adults and adults. Pay special attention to the period before and the couple of years after a parental split when conflict levels are most likely to be high.
